SCI-Arc I Spring 2010

The Rec Center located in downtown Los Angeles, north of the 110 freeway. The typical condition privileges genericism, meaning that the activities incorporated only require generic spatial provisions and rarely offer specific formal opportunities. The Rec Center challenges this typical model by framing it as an architectural problem within a matrix of three attributes: geometry, directionality, and velocity. These attributes are used to organize an even broader range of possible programs within the Rec Center type and provide for the possibility for specific architectural qualities to emerge.
BMX, Swimming and Bouldering are selected within a range of activities and coupled with a base set of programmatic requirements. The selections explicitly convey a conceptual framework for the project. The use of program and content, in a material way, pursues an architectural agenda.
